▲ Surrender

Affirmation of the Day:

  • I always have the power to choose what I hold onto and what I release. I am free.
  • I know that there is a powerful force of peace within me, and it is available at any moment.
  • I am loved and accepted and adored as I am, and there is nothing to fear.
  • I am not my thoughts or emotions, so I can gracefully let them pass.

Encouraging Message:

In the practice of living a mindful life, sometimes we can get overwhelmed by big emotions, and can drift away from the space of inner peace. For a moment, we can forget who we are and that our strength lies within.

When this happens, it’s helpful to surrender—practice laying down what you are going through to your higher (or inner) power. That being or essence—no matter what you call it—sees you, knows you, and loves you. No matter how far you seem to have fallen, you can always return back to the space of inner peace.

In real time, this looks like you facing yourself—sitting with your thoughts and emotions, or using some other tools that you can build up in your "toolbox" to help you through those moments.

It's not always easy, but I've found that every time I face what I'm going through head-on, I experience some sort of breakthrough—I rebuild trust with myself and I remember that I've got my own back.

The next time you feel big, dense emotions (anxiety, fear, sadness, anger, doubt, shame etc.), sit or lay down, and close your eyes. Visualize all your troubling emotions and thoughts, and notice where they show up (your head, your gut, your heart etc.) Don't judge, just notice. Notice also how they show up (as dark clouds, or creepy spiders or bugs—there's no wrong way to do this).

Take a deep breath, and call in the feeling of love. Allow this love to pour through you, every inch of your body, allowing it to anchor you. Feel the awareness of this love moving through you while you still have all these other thoughts and feelings there too, that both can exist and that all is well.

Then, use your mind to move these thoughts and feelings out of your body—right in front of you. Feel the difference between having them inside of you, versus having them outside of you (you may feel lighter, you might feel weirdly empty. Trust whatever comes up).

Then see it all getting smaller and smaller, or fade more and more out of your vision. Eventually it gets so small or dim that you cannot see or feel it anymore.

And all you are left with is unconditional love. Stay in this space for a few moments and let this love continue to fill you. Remember that this essence of peace is who you truly are.

Reflective Prompts:

  • What are some tools that help you return to your center in overwhelming moments?
  • How can you apply these tools or practices to your daily life?
  • In what ways can you remind yourself that this is just a practice, and not about being perfect?

Closing:

Remember that every moment is a new beginning, and you can always wash the slate clean and return to the practice of mindfulness. This is your reminder to use forgiveness and compassion with yourself on the daily.
